Earlier this year, Rafael Ponce was elected President-Elect with the expectation that he would take over as President on January 1, 2022. With Rick's passing last month, Rafael was voted by the board to start his duties early and has graciously stepped into the role of President effective June 1, 2021.
Good luck in your new role, Rafael!
Graduated from the Mexican Naval Academy as Naval Sciences Engineer; spent 8 years on board Mexican Navy ships (Oceanic Patrol Ships, Destroyers, Dredging Ship and a Hydrographic Ship) at different positions (Operations Officer, Navigation Officer, Weapons Officer, ASW Officer, Chief Engineering, and Commanding Officer). I became a Category B and later Category A Hydrographer with a Master of Science in Hydrography at the University of Southern Mississippi. I was commissioned at the Mexican Hydrographic Office where I spent the last 15 years of my naval career until my voluntary retirement in 2007. Since then, I work at Esri the GIS company, currently as Principal Maritime Consultant.
As a professional mariner and hydrographer, I’m passionate about the oceans and progress of our world through hydrography. Supporting people and new colleagues in the field, as well as learning from all, are my motivations to keep vibrant our hydrographic society.
