THSOA – Midwest Chapter Meeting

The October 4th meeting at Northwestern Michigan College went much better than our April meeting.  We had about 15 participants.  4 were active students at NMC and the rest were members of industry, the USACE, and a few vendors.  During the meeting we set our entire schedule for 2020.  February 7th we will be a meeting in the Chicago area.  It will be at the Columbia Yacht club.  Invitations will start going out later this week.  The next meeting will be October 2nd at NMC.  NMC has a ‘Tech Surge’ conference that draws a lot of vendors and we are going to hold our meeting on day 2.  This way, our members can see the new technologies, demonstrations, etc., from the event.  We are expecting over 100 people to attend.

We now have enough money to hand out two $1,000 scholarships and fund one applicant to go to the Canadian Hydrographic Conference.  A team is being developed to get notification of the scholarships out to educational centers in our region.  The same team will vote on the winners for the scholarships.  Hopefully we can get them handed out prior to our next meeting in February.

We are looking for student volunteers to help us with membership drives.  Most of these will be out of NMC, but I am hoping in the future to widen this out to other Universities in our region.

Here is the meeting recap:  (For those who weren’t able to attend)

We started the morning with a brief safety message followed by a review of The Hydrographic Society of America’s mission statement.

NMC Hardy Dam Inspection Presentation:

Kelly Smith & Aaron Bottke

QPS Review by Matthew Wilson

HIPS & SIPS Demonstration by Tami Francksen

A review of the member survey conducted in August.

The Chapter section of the meeting started with a discussion of the best dates for the next meeting.  Thanks to the vendors in attendance, we made sure to schedule our event on a week opposite of the other conferences going on during that time of year.  Our next dates will be:

                February 7th, 2020 – Chicago – Columbia Yacht Club

                October 2nd, 2020 – Northwestern Michigan College

We also developed a team who will work on sending out information on the scholarships we have available.  The same team will determine the recipients are after applications are submitted.  We are looking to have these scholarships awarded before the next meeting.

Ed Bailey, NMC, will be looking for volunteers from the students at NMC to start a membership drive.  This will include calling companies and agencies that conduct hydrographic survey operations in the Midwest region and informing them of our upcoming events.

Brian Lounsbury closed the meeting with the Treasurers report that confirmed our financial ability to hand out scholarships.  Special thanks to Brian for keeping up with our finances and keeping up with our bills.  We are also working to become an independent 501 (3) c organization.

The after meeting at North Peak.  Great recommendation from those local to the Travers City area.
